Fireworks Over Edinburgh

What could be better than seeing in the New Year in the Scottish capital city of Edinburgh? World renowned for its Hogmany celebrations, the party starts on Thursday 30th December 2010 and keeps running until Sunday 2nd January 2011! The four day Hogmanay festival has everything from blazing fireworks, music and dance to art and cinema so whatever your tastes, you won't be disappointed.

So, what are the highlights of this festival of events? Well obviously you can’t miss the Midnight Fireworks ushering in the New Year at the Castle. This year, as in the past, they promise to be a spectacle to behold. On the Thursday there’s a planned torch light parade which will create a river of fire running through the streets of Edinburgh.

On the Friday there’s a candle lit concert at St. Giles cathedral celebrating the music of Bach and Mozart. There’s also a concert in West Princes Street Gardens with big name bands such as Biffy Clyro, the Charlatans and the Kaiser Chiefs. The Keilidh in Resolution Square will be home to more traditional Scottish treats such as Scottish music, dance, food and Drink.

New Year

If you’ve made it all the way through to the New Year on Saturday, the party will still be in full swing! There’s the chance to take in the best of contemporary Scottish culture at the Resolution Concert in Resolution Square with poetry, music and song. There’s the New Years Day conversation which this year sees Ian Rankin and Lin Anderson talk about Edinburgh and it’s ability to inspire art and literature. If you need refreshing after a night of indulgence, there’s the gentle 1 mile run which sets off from the castle at 1pm, the world famous One O’Clock Gun acting as the starting signal for the event.

During the whole festival Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Carnival will run every day at Market Street, or take in the spectacular view of the proceedings from the 33m span of the Edinburgh wheel.

There are hundreds of other events and parties taking place over the four days of the festival. We’ve just scratched the surface here to give you a taster of what’s available at the Edinburgh Hogmanay celebrations. To find out more about what’s on offer click here
