Top British Museums

London's kooky collective of museums and galleries offers visitors a plethora of opportunities to explore history, science, nature and archaeology within a relatively short distance between each attraction. English history however, isn't confined to her capital alone, and there are a wealth of museums littered throughout the country,  throwing wide the doors to the pockets of history that are often overlooked. From prolific names that have shaped history, to permanent exhibitions celebrating the years of film and multimedia; England bears an exciting variety of museums just waiting to be uncovered!

Nestled in the heart of the New Forest, Beaulieu Palace House, Beaulieu Abbey and the infamous National Motor Museum make up one of the premier museum attractions in England. The recent addition of the 'World of Top Gear Enormodrome' has seen visitor figures quadruple, lured by exhibitions featuring the quirky 'mod-cars' from past series' and a replica production office.

Beaulieu's National Motor Museum is the largest of it's kind in the U.K, with over 250 permanent vehicles on display, including: Donald Campbell's 1961 'Bluebird', and Damon Hill's William's Renault FW18. Beaulieu Palace House exhibits some fascinating artwork and artefacts belonging to the resident Montagu family (owners since 1538). Beaulieu Abbey is also well worth visiting, to explore the fascinating cloisters, herb gardens and interior exhibition.

Manchester's Imperial War Museum, perhaps more than any other of it's kind, focuses upon the social consequences, rather than just political cause of modern conflict. Permanent exhibitions range from war propaganda, artillery and weaponry, to the fascinating 'Big Picture' project, which transforms the entire main exhibition space into a cinematic experience. Action Stations, and the Silos Exhibitions allow for an interactive voyage of discovery, into a world of war-time memorabilia, relics and artefacts - including the first shell fired from England during WWI.  Holiday apartments in London

Easily England's best museum for everything culture and couture, the 'V & A' in London is an experience like no other. Where else on Earth would Kylie Minogue's dressing room, sit adjacent to a 17th Century Meissen Vulture cast? The 'History and Periods' permanent exhibition invites visitors on a journey through invention and creativity, incorporating such samples as the Leonardo Da Vinci 'notebooks'; Balenciaga's iconic 1960's couture 'Sack Dress', and early Renée Lalique jewellery from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Highlights of Victoria and Albert's 'Theatre and Voice' collections include Shakespearean costumes, Rolling Stones artwork and Pete Townshend's famous smashed guitar, from a 1964 gig at the Railway Hotel, Harrow.  London apartments

Dorset County Museum, Dorchester
Dorset's County Museum first opened it's doors back in 1884, with a few simple fossil specimens found upon the 'Jurassic' coast. Today, the County encourages visitors to 'dig down and discover' with two archaeological exhibitions dedicated to Ancient Dorset and the Jurassic Coast. Not for the faint hearted, the Ancient Dorset proudly showcases the skeletal remains of Iron Age Briton's butchered by the Romans, while the Jurassic Coast boasts a giant Pliosaur dinosaur jaw bone, over 15 feet long! Other areas of interest include the Dorset Writer's Gallery, with notable examples of esteemed creatives, such as Thomas Hardy.  Holiday cottages Dorset
