Leicester Tourist Attractions

Leicestershire's not just about cheese and pork pies - there's tons to do on your UK holidays in the county. Those of you renting one of our UK cottages won't be disappointed; there are family-friendly days out bursting from Leicestershire's seams. We've picked our favourites below, so once you've finished with the unpacking, get cracking! Looking for that lovely holiday home in Leicester?

Narrow Boat At Foxton Locks - flckr - mick / LumixFoxton Locks - Foxton, nr Market Hanborough
If waterside walks float your boat, then head on down to Foxton Locks. A 'staircase' of 10 locks in the heart of rural south Leicestershire, Foxton was made for lazy Sundays on your UK cottage holiday. Watch as brightly coloured narrowboats make their way up the hill, or even take a boat trip yourself. Meet the ducks and herons hiding in the reeds as you stroll along the canal to the Foxton Locks Inn, where you can enjoy a cheeky pint or two. Chuck in a museum and a gift shop and you've got a grand day out. Sail along to www.foxtonlocks.com to find out more.

National Space Centre - flckr - Danny NicholsonNational Space Centre - Leicester
Just two miles from the heart of Leicester you'll find a whole other world waiting for you. Sit back in the UK's largest planetarium and get hands on with over 150 exhibits. Blast off in the Rocket Tower lift, venture into the Mars Yard to see Martian Rover robots, experience for yourself what it's like to walk on the moon and see if you've got what it takes to survive in outer space. You can even see Leicestershire's very own meteorite and really eager beavers can enjoy talks from experts. For UK holidays that are out of this world, get on down to www.spacecentre.co.uk.

The Blue BrewBelvoir Brewery - Old Darby
If you enjoy the odd tipple, chances are you'll enjoy a visit to Belvoir Brewery on your UK holidays in Leicestershire. Take a tour of the brewery and watch on as the brewers work their magic. Of course, you'll be able to sample the finished products - for a real taste of Leicestershire, sip away at the Blue Brew, made with a good dose of Stilton whey! Try a few brews straight from the tap and then stock up at the Sample Cellar shop. And since you shouldn't drink on an empty stomach, it'd be silly not to treat yourself to a slap-up meal at the brewery too. Find out more at www.belvoirbrewery.com.

Scarlet Macaw - Macaw Mountain Bird Park - Copan Ruinas, Honduras - flckr - Adalberto.H.VegaTropical Birdland - Desford
A tropical jungle is probably the last thing you'd expect to find in Leicestershire. But think again! Free-flying parrots and macaws swoop overhead, while walk-through aviaries house many other exotic feathered friends. There are also six acres of woodland to stomp round, where you can spot woodpeckers, kingfishers, jays and much more.  Visit in season and you can even see macaw chicks hatching. Birdwatcher or not, you're bound to want to pay more than a flying visit to Tropical Birdland. Find out more at www.tropicalbirdland.co.uk.

Donington Grand Prix Collection - Castle Donington, nr Derby
It may have a Derby postcode, but the village of Castle Donington is firmly in Leicestershire. Take a pit stop at the Donington Grand Prix Collection. With five halls of exhibits, you'll see cars that were driven by the likes of Prost, Mansell and Senna. Also parked up is racing legend Sterling Moss's Lotus in which he drove to victory in the 1961 Monaco Grand Prix. And remember, safety first! The museum is also home to the world's largest collection of motor racing helmets. New to Donington is the Wheatcroft Collection, military vehicles and weapons from World War Two. So, if you fancy a bit of motor mayhem on your UK holiday, look no further than www.donington-park.co.uk/pages/motorsport-museum.html
